History of the Women’s South Shore Golf League
In 1926 the women of six golf clubs south of Boston formed a new organization for the purpose of promoting friendly interclub competition and social interaction. The charter members of the Women’s South Shore Golf League were Cohasset, Duxbury, Hatherly, Marshfield, South Shore and Wollaston .
Scituate joined in 1952, South Shore withdrew in 1954, Plymouth joined in 1955 and Halifax in 1973, bringing the total to 8 clubs, which constitutes its membership now.
For the first 25 years the League individual championship was a four-day event held midsummer at a different club each year. All that entered played a minimum of 3 day’s qualifying in flights with consolation rounds for the first day losers. Today it is a Four Ball 2 day tournament.
There are 2 Tournaments named after women who attained state prominence for their dedication and contribution to the game, they are Cris Eaton, and Dolly Sullivan.
In 1961 the Cosgrove Family, longtime members of Marshfield Country Club, established the Boros Memorial Tournament in memory of Anne "Buttons" Cosgrove Boros. She was the wife of professional golfer Julius Boro and Mass. State Champion in 1950. She died giving birth to their son Julius Boros III. The WSSGL logo and the pin awarded to the Boros winners were both designed by the late Priscilla Bailey..
It is very important to continue this tradition of the WSSGL and all the work that our fellow members have done for so many years. It has giving us the opportunity to make lasting friendships and giving something back to the game we love.
